Our dataset of climate media coverage in the United States and Germany reveals a worrying development. After a few years of elevated meda attention to climate change, the share of coverage dedicated to the topic is receding in most media in both countries. The following graphs provide some detail.
Overall coverage of climate change is receding in both countries
The following graphs show the share of articles using select climate-related terms in select outlets (see below) in both countries. Notably, the overall percentage is still higher in the US, but has dropped more significantly than in Germany.


Marked differences between news outlets
The next two graphs show how coverage has developed across news outlets. They show that the last years’ drop is happening more or less across all news outlets. Still, some outlets report considerably more frequently on climate change.
