A collection of sources to get basic information about climate change and its related issues
[für deutsche Quellen nach unten scrollen]
Climate change is a major human-induced problem, rooted in extractivism and exploitation of land, animals, and other humans. Being an inherently human-caused problem, it requires human-derived solutions. Like the climate problem itself, these solutions must also sit at the intersection between physical, biogeochemical, and social systems. To solve such a deep-rooted issue, it’s important that we understand the intricacies and nuances of the climate problem & how we got here.
In order to do so, it’s best to start with the basics. Here is a list of resources that we’ve compiled to introduce the topic. Not only on the science of why & how the climate is changing, but also on the evolution of climate solutions, policy measures and mitigation & adaptation strategies.
First up – and highly recommended – is the UN website on Climate Change. This site has a plethora of useful information & links. Here are just some to check out:
Science:
What Is Climate Change? | United Nations
Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts may be natural, such as through variations in the solar cycle. But since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas.
Raising Ambition:
Fast Facts | United Nations
Check here for regularly updated facts and findings on climate and its links to the economy, social issues, nature and more.
Net Zero Coalition | United Nations
More countries are commiting to net-zero emissions by 2050. The coalition is growing. But commitments must be backed by bold, credible actions. By every country in the world. Starting now. Net Zero #ItsPossible. Starting now! Starting now! Starting now!
Climate Adaptation | United Nations
There are many ways to adapt to what is happening and what will happen. Individuals can take some simple measures. You can plant or preserve trees around your home, for instance, to keep temperatures cooler inside. Clearing brush might reduce fire hazards. If you own a business, start thinking about and planning around possible climate risks, such as hot days that prevent workers from doing outside tasks.
Actors, Actions & Solutions:
Climate Solutions | United Nations
COVID-19 exposed the consequences of the failure to make sufficient progress on the Sustainable Development Goals and in implementing the Paris Agreement on climate change. We would have been in a better place if we had.
Business Action | United Nations
The world is at a critical juncture-decisions and actions taken now can either put us on track to limit climate change and meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, or, we can continue on the path of business as usual, with rising emissions and accelerating climate impacts.
Climate Action Initiatives | United Nations
Governments, businesses and civil society members are connecting in climate initiatives to speed the pace of climate action. Initiated at the 2019 Climate Action Summit held at the United Nations, the initiatives are reducing emissions, tackling critical concerns such as jobs and gender equality, unlocking finance, building sustainable infrastructure, using nature-based solutions, and advancing adaptation and climate resilience.
UN and Climate Change:
The Paris Agreement | United Nations
Climate change is a global emergency that goes beyond national borders. It is an issue that requires international cooperation and coordinated solutions at all levels.
COP26: Together for our planet | United Nations
The UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow (COP26) brought together 120 world leaders and over 40,000 registered participants, including 22,274 party delegates, 14.124 observers and 3.886 media representatives. For two weeks, the world was riveted on all facets of climate change — the science, the…

MOOC Course: Climate Change, Risks and Challenges
Climate change exists. The first signs of change are clearly evident. Extreme weather conditions around the world are becoming increasingly frequent and the Arctic ice is disappearing. The temperature increase can be felt in our everyday lives. These and other phenomena will intensify and have a more…
A short 5-part series explores ‘how we got here’, the role of fossil fuel companies, why there’s such an urgent need for action, how climate change is related to social justice and what we can do about it. The episodes are easy to watch, just under 10 minutes long, and incredibly inspiring:
The Breakdown | Earthrise
In this series, we explore climate change: how we got here, where we’re headed, and what we can all do to make a difference.
